PROFILE
Joe B. Young is the Tax Assessor-Collector of Pike County, having been elected to that position in 1983. He is a 1973 graduate of North Pike High School in Summit, MS where he was valedictorian of his class, a member of the Hall of Fame, and Mr. North Pike High School. He was chosen his senior year to as an all state football player and participated in the Mississippi High School All Star football game. After high school, Mr. Young graduated from Southwest Community College where he was again chosen all state and all star in football. While at Southwest, he served as treasurer of the student body. After Southwest he attended Mississippi College on a football scholarship. He holds a B.S. degree in mathematics from Mississippi College where he served as co-captain of the football team and was selected by the faculty to receive the Farr Scholarship. Mr. Young began his career teaching in the public school system in Mississippi and Louisiana for six years before being elected to public office in 1983. He has achieved numerous educational and professional accomplishments within the assessing field. He has served as President of the Mississippi Assessors and Collectors Association (MACA) and President of the Mississippi Chapter of the International Association of Assessing Officers (IAAO). In 1999, he was honored by international (IAAO) as the member of the year. He has achieved Mississippi Assessment Evaluator (MAE) certification within the Mississippi Education and Certification Program for assessors and appraisers and also holds a Certified General Real Estate Appraiser license. Mr. Young frequently testifies before the Mississippi Legislature on subjects related to tax assessing and collecting. In 1975 he married Ramona Alford and they are blessed to have three sons. Mr. Young and his family attend Union Primitive Baptist Church where he serves as a deacon. In 1999 Mr. Young helped to form the southern gospel quartet, The Providentials, and sings over 100 concerts annually with the group all across the United States.
